Florissant is St. Louis County’s largest municipality, but it still manages to feel like a small town in many ways. Theatre buffs, retirees, starting families, and students all find something to appreciate about the city named one of Money Magazines Best Small Cities.

THE FEEL

Florissant feels like a city on the outskirts of a city. Quaint neighborhoods have easy access to major roads and shopping areas, making it both peaceful and convenient. Houses tend to be ranch homes and two-story subdivisions, with some older homes available for those that prefer old-school charm.

HISTORY

The exact date that settlers first came to occupy the Valley of Florissant is unknown. But local tales have it that Florissant is one of the oldest settlements in Missouri, as old as St. Louis itself. The city’s real growth spurt happened after World War II when major industries moved to the city.

ACCESSIBILITY

Florissant spans interstate 270 and 67, and is an equal distance drive between downtown and Lambert St. Louis International airport.

CULTURE

In 2012, Florissant was ranked 76 out of 100 in Money Magazine's list of America's Best Small Cities. It has also been called the best small city to retire to, and the 2nd safest city in Missouri.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Florissant Civic Center Theatre (FCCT) hosts many productions for both residents and visitors to enjoy. The theatre seats 567 and features a fully draped traditional proscenium stage. Over 120,000 patrons annually attend performances of all types here. It is also home to several theatre companies, including the Hawthorne Players and The Alpha Players of Florissant. The FCC Theatre and Art Gallery are available for use by patrons who wish to produce shows, house art exhibits, or hold meetings/conventions.

SCHOOLS

Florissant is covered by the Hazelwood and Ferguson-Florissant public school districts. There are several K-8 parochial schools in Florissant, some of which are highly regarded in the area. Florissant is also home to two theological colleges and an extension campus for Lindenwood University. Florissant Valley Community College and University of Missouri-St. Louis are located nearby in neighboring Ferguson.
